On the economic impact of the Keystone pipeline ...

We looked at the impact of the Keystone pipeline project on the Canadian and US economies. We found that the project might result in the loss of 75,000 manufacturing jobs in Canada while having a positive impact on manufacturing employment in the US. We argue that the key driver of this dynamic is the reduction of the competitiveness of the Canadian manufacturing industry (versus the US manufacturing industry) due to a stronger Canadian dollar.

We were looking into the relation between the Canadian dollar exchange rate and the oil prices. We found a relation that is becoming stronger as the production of oil (from oil sands) increases along with the price of oil, hence increasing the demand for Canadian dollars in the currency markets.
